The eight zillion pound gorilla at Thanksgiving is the Husband.
There’s only one Husband, and he calls all the shots We make it seem complicated, but it’s not
When we don’t get all we want, we’re frustrated; but it’s our own fault
when we see him, super-civil, and we’re being rude at dinner
When we can’t trust or obey the Husband (and there’s only one Husband, and we all know who he is, he is God) it’s a lack of faith. We can read what he says in his book, the Bible: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) And it’s easy to be still, like he says; you can just relax. But it is an order. We have to cease our bad activity, and respect God, if we want him, and his benefits. Wait for God. When we become sensitive to him, we are in good shape. Or, maybe we don’t care, and we are not sensitive to him; that’s a bad sign.
And it’s a test. We should know that God’s people are sensitive to God, others are not. When God’s people disobey God, they feel really guilty (sensitive) that they let God down. Insensitivity is a bad sign. By hearing from people, in one way or another, by having a guilty conscience, or reading the Bible and praying, we will learn what’s wrong. Or we become coarse, and hardly care. And some are, unfortunately, ignorant, because they simply haven’t heard about all of this. Maybe they live far away. But God has a plan, dating back, in his story, for them.
Those who don’t care are in a perilous position. What’s at stake? Losing the easy life, with God: physical, mental, social, and spiritual health, peace, safety, security, and eternity, in a perfect place. Maybe that doesn’t matter to some. Regardless, God’s probably returning, very soon, to separate his people from the rest, and the eight zillion pound gorilla in the room at Thanksgiving is just a taste of what that will be like…
