Distant soldiers in the ancient war

I wish I could be with her…

There’s little vision there, in the trenches
Not much to live for (till war has ended)
And she’s a private, and not the General
She’s often tired, he’s not much better

No going out now, stuck in the barracks
Her stomach’s growling so she has crackers
She’s rarely slacking but working harder
No turning back on her model sergeant

She has lots of fear from much neglect
And has no career but disrespect
No fancy car or loving spouse
prestigious job or nice fine house
Those little gods won’t make her proud
Such idols are just not allowed

So, what does she live for?
To be alive, forever
and live in peace, like doves
be filled with power, often
for people far above
And rule with honor, always
the bridegroom’s bride, with love
And that’s what he’ll give her

Few truly listen while life bears lessons
Since I have been there, I know they’re special
We pass through waters, though we are wretched
Though never ordered life can upset things

So, she gets bitter with her own captain
Though she’s a quitter, he makes it happen
It seems unusual that she gets chastised
and even cruel but he is the captain

Strangers and pilgrims on the earth
declare plainly that they seek a country
They might have opportunity to have returned
The author and finisher chastens us, but
it’s for our profit

The profit is ours!
The profit is ours

So, what does she want?
To be alive, forever
and live in peace, like doves
be filled with power often
for people far above
and rule with honor, always
the bridegroom’s bride, with love
And that’s what he’s got
